About Soccer

How to play soccer

To play a game with your buds, all you need to know is that soccer's played by two teams on a field or some other rectangularish open area. There are 2 goals, one at either end of the field. Each team guards one goal and tries to get the ball into the other. Try to stay away from windows (a stray kick will break them - mom will be mad), babies or small animals (a stray kick will hurt them - you'll be sad), and thorn bushes (those suckers hurt getting a ball out - although the blood from the scratches make you look tough). You can't use your hands and arms unless you're a goalie so for the most part you kick the ball to get it where you want it to be.

For official games, there are more specific rules, i.e. 11 players per side, size of the field and ball, etc ....these are spelled out by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA’s) in their rule book : Laws of the Game at http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/lawsofthegame.html.

Depending on a team’s age group, rules may vary (try explaining offsides to a 5 year old). Your local or state soccer association should be able to provide you with a rule book or explain differences.

Do you know what you think you know?

Take the quiz and see if you really know what you're talking about...or better yet, make your mom or dad take some of these quizzes before they can tell you how you should be playing.

The rules of soccer are very simple:  if it moves, kick it.  If it doesn't move, kick it until it does.
